31ST ANNUAL BATOR INTERNATIONAL SWAPMEET

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Last weekend Bill, Chris and I shared booth space and good times with Wes White from Four Acesat the 31st Annual Vintage Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet at the El Camino College in Torrance, CA. Our revelry involved drinking till 12 a.m. Friday evening, then bedding down for five hours of shut eye. At exactly 5 a.m. Saturday morning, we were rudely awakened by the rumbling of pit bikes and the arrival of the last 50 or so vendors who didn't make the pilgramage the night before. For unititated participants like me, the swap meet experience was an eye opener. Swap vets like Wes have a program that must be experienced to be believed. Here's how it worked: when event organizers opened the gates at 4;30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Wes drove in, parked his truck, jumped on his Sears Free Spirit banana seat bicycle and scoured for fresh merch in the back of every other vendors' rig. Not knowing this was how things are done, Bill and I naively arranged our garage scraps and set up our tents and tables for the action we ignorantly assumed would start on Saturday morning. Suckers! After getting with the program I sold some really sweet Chinese motorcycle tires and used the revenue to buy a really cool skid plate for my '07 EDR special.

Around 9pm Chris and his friend Yuriko showed up on their his-and-hers outlaw choppers. Chris was planning to join us sooner, but his frankenpan had electrical problems. Never one to be outdone by a challenge, Chris got the OK Special and made the 150-mile trek to Torrance for the night's festivities.

Thanks to Wes from Four Aces for showing us the ropes. I'm looking forward to more swapping in the months to come.

SOCAL RIDE TO SMOKEOUT WEST

McGoo posted this route a couple months ago on our blog, and I think we are going to stick with it in the name of staying off boring freeways, seeing new stuff and just generally not being in a big hurry. If it takes a million hours and sucks, then we'll ride back on the 10/60 etc and haul ass.

We plan on chasing our selves with a truck and if something blows up and can't be fixed within about 15 minutes that bike is getting loaded and hauled on the trailer. We'll fix it at the next gas stop. Other wise it'll take weeks to go 425 miles. It may take days anyway, who knows? If we drag ass we'll get a room somewhere lovely like Blythe or just sleep off the road somewhere and hit it again Thursday.

I think we have about six to ten guys in our direct posse riding out together on a wide variety of bikes. We'll see who really makes it. Anyone that wants to hook up and ride with us, or camp in the same place etc, feel free. PM if you need a cell number or email me at billb@revolution-ads.com

From McGoo:

If you want to join our crew for the ride from Temecula, CA, to Cottonwood, AZ, please plan to meet us at the Temecula Denny's (same place we took off from on this year's EDR) 7:00 a.m. on WED, October 4th. The Smokeout starts on Friday, October 6th.

I'm not the cartographer that Billdozer is, but I've assembled a route from SoCal to Cottonwood, AZ that looks pretty good. About the first 120 miles of it traces the same route we took to Brawley on this year's EDR.

Here's the route I plan to take on my motorcycle. The miles shown are rough, but close enough:

79 east out of Temecula to 78 east (50 miles through Warner Springs to Julian)

78 east from Julian to 86 south (60 miles)

86 south to Brawley (25 miles)

From Brawley, take 78 east through Imperial San Dunes recreation area to Palo Verde, CA (80 miles)

From Palo Verde, continue on 78 N/East to the 10 freeway in Blythe, CA (15 miles)

10 east freeway out of Blythe, CA through Ehrenberg and Quartzite, AZ (50 miles)

Continue on 10 east freeway to AZ-60 east (15 miles)

Take AZ-60 east through Salome and Wenden to Aguila (75 miles)

In Aguila, take 71 north to Congress, AZ (25 miles)

In Congress, AZ, take the AZ-89 to Humboldt, AZ (30 miles)

total estimate mileage = 425

MCGOO'S DONOR BIKE

I realize that "hell raising" and "Sportster" go together like "man tits" and "frisbee," but I've got EDR fever. That means it's time to build another bike. I picked up this donor machine from a crazy old woman in San Diego. It's a 1999 XL883 with 172 ORIGINAL miles. According to the motivated seller, the bike hadn't been ridden in four years. Four grand later I flushed the gas tank, drained the oil, charged the battery, pulled the choke and started her right up. She's not much to look at, but I'm planning to throw the motor into a Smokin' Gun rigid frame from our friends Jason and Marty at Flyrite Choppers. I'll chronicle the build as it progresses. In other EDR theme bike news, our friend Andy Jenkins has committed to painting my EDR special for next year's ride. I know all this bike building is just so much self-agrandizing crap, but I've got a fever and the only cure is more Sportster! Via con Dios, amigos!

THE NEW SITE IS FINALLY UP!

Welcome to the new El Diablo Run website. Notice to the left is a list of generous sponsors. As a testimony to last year's success, every builder who was present decided to sponsor it this year. Add in Nate and his plumbing company, and two new faces-- Biltwell Inc. and Wes at Four Aces, we've got a pretty well rounded group supporting this thing.

A special thanks goes out to Mitch Cotie for doing the chupacabra artwork for this years graphic. Mitch is planning on riding next year so make sure you buy him a tequila shot or a lap dance in honor of his artistic skill. You can see more of his work at Mitch's Site

Please browse our new site and soak up the details. We've tried to outline everything so we don't have to babysit anyone. Read the FAQ's, study the map and visit the links on the "Where" page. If you are new to this run, spend some time on this site before you email us and ask dumb ass questions. If you are an old salt who rode last year, the info is basically the same, except we are going to be providing a BBQ and a truckload of free beer. We're staying at the same places and doing the same things. Last year we had about 50 riders and we expect that to easily double for 2007. Get your reservations early and make your plans now, before you know it we'll be into 2007 and it'll be time to ride south...

KUTTY'S FUNDRAISER

Kutty just posted this on the Jockey Journal last night, and we're going to roll out there and you should to.

On august 11th my friend Chris Currie wrecked on his bike. He, at this time is still in an induced coma. I have explained most details already. His retirement from the marines would be final at the end of month, but he has been reinstated, for insurance purposes I am sure. Though his insurance is covered, His wife and three daughters could use our support. I and another neighbor organised a fundraiser at the Bum Steer on Saturday Sept. 9th. It will start at 6.00 pm and go on as long as we like. There will be donations, a raffle, and around 8 or 9 pm THE WHITEWALLS will play a set. The bum steer is a bar, restaurant, and it will be all ages till 10pm or so. Let me know if anyone is riding or bringing Hot Rods or Customs, there will be special parking. Thanks again, Kutty
